Sample Letter to MP
Dear
I write to you with serious concerns about the NSW Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill 2023 (Alex Greenwich Bill) and I ask that you vote down this Bill in its entirety.
Some of my concerns include:
- Introduction of Sex self-id and removing the binary nature of sex in law in NSW. This threatens the protected sex category of women and girls and skews the collection of key social data based on sex categories
- Removing parental knowledge in some cases for children under the age of 16 who want to change their sex descriptor, in the face of doubts surfacing, or active discrediting of this practice by more experts in the field in Australia and internationally
- Watering down the current comprehensive protections in NSW for women’s sport, introducing an overbearing and inappropriate prescription in law to limit scope of decisions by sport organisers for children over the age of 12
- Current bans on solicitation in the sex industry to be removed, likely to cause offence to sections of society including religious groups, while diluting protections for women, such as overturning the current illegality of pimping
- Problematic provisions for strip-searching that may harm the safety of women in authority, including a female strip-search of a biological male identifying as a female
- Removing the rights of women and men to associate based on their sex and sexuality.
This Bill, if passed, presents a substantial threat to the human rights and safety of women and children in NSW. Removing distinctions between male and female ignores the biological differences between us and will, as we see overseas, result in violation of women’s spaces by men opportunistically claiming a female gender, given how easy it will be under sex self-ID. This is an intolerable unintended consequence, and women’s views on this aspect have not been taken into account in the drafting of this Bill.
The sweeping nature of this omnibus Bill is itself unwarranted, and its timetable does not allow for sufficient time to consider the sensitivities of what is proposed. The sex self-ID components should be removed from the Bill entirely for individual attention and discussion given what is at stake. Even more so in the light of calls by the United Nations to more countries to not embrace sex self-ID without considering emerging evidence of harms.Alex Greenwich makes no secret of his high ambitions for this Bill. It goes much too far. This is not simply a gender ideology argument, it is about real-world impacts. I urge you to stand up for the groups including women and girls who would be adversely impacted.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss these important issues with you.
Sincerely,
Name, Address, Phone number
